Job Shadow Interview
My experience during my job shadow interview with Dr. Jamie Wilson was the most memorable over all, the staff were all very helpful in teaching me about the way things were done at the Lindsay Veterinary Clinic. The Vet assistants showed me around the facility starting with the Surgical room then the radiation room for x-rays, the restroom, the isolation room and the check up room. Soon after, I observed as the Vet neutered a dog. Some things I have noticed as this was going on were the undivided concentration the Vet gave during the procedure as well as the preparation of the vet assistants ready to replace tools with more functional ones as they ware down during the surgeries. Though she was busy throughout the entire time, I managed to interview Dr. Jamie Wilson, asking her these questions:
Susan: "What Qualities does a person need to possess to be in this type of position?"
Dr. Wilson: "Good academic skills and good medical skills."
Susan: " What training or education is required for this type of work?"
Dr. Wilson: " Basic knowledge, college or online training to be a vet assistant, some knowledge in medicine, as well as college or online training to be a veterinarian."
Susan: " What formal or on the job training does the organization provide?"
Jade a Vet Assistant answered, " The vet provides the training giving hands on experience which helps really well with attention."
Susan: " What inspired you to choose your career?"
Dr. Wilson: " I like working with animals."
Susan: " How has your career affected your life?"
Dr. Wilson: " Takes over it's a full time thing."
Susan: " What advice do you have for a person aspiring to enter your career field?"
Dr. Wilson: " If you can get the best grades in school you can, you can get experience into seeing what it's really like."
Susan: " Do you take work home?"
Dr. Wilson: " Quite often."
Susan: " How important are grades for obtaining a job in this field?"
Dr. Wilson: " Very important."
Susan: " What is the most rewarding part of your job?"
Dr. Wilson: " Helping the animals."
Susan: " What is the most challenging part of your job?"
Dr. Wilson: " Every day things."
Throughout my time in the Lindsay Veterinary Clinic, I have learned numerous things for instance, when technical difficulties occur during a surgical procedure, the vet has the vet assistance replace it with fully functional equipment in time to continue the procedure before the sedation wares off from the animal. I have also learned that being a veterinarian is a highly concentrated and professional job and has very little room for mistakes to be made.
With this experience I have seen a new side of the career I was looking into working with and come to realization that, I would rather go into a different career with animals and agriculture.
